Have you ever heard of the “Four Corners of Death”?

Right here in Lincoln Park San Diego that intersection of Euclid Avenue and Imperial Avenue held a grim reputation. For decades this area was a battleground for rival gangs. Drug sales and violence were rampant. Lincoln Park a vibrant community in southeastern San Diego has a complex history. It’s a place where rich cultural diversity exists alongside a past marred by gang violence.

Lincoln Park is named after President Abraham Lincoln. The oldest part is between Imperial Avenue and Ocean View Boulevard. Lincoln High School stands proudly on Imperial Avenue in the heart of the neighborhood. Originally planned to be sliced through by State Route 157 the community fought for preservation. The highway plans were ultimately abandoned.

Lincoln Park boasts a diverse population. People of Hispanic heritage make up the largest percentage followed by African Americans and Asians. The neighborhood stands out for its overwhelmingly non-white population. It’s a community rich in cultural heritage.

The “Dip” a densely populated section of Logan Avenue between 47th Street and Euclid Avenue was another gang hotspot. The Bay Vista Housing Projects now Sea Breeze Gardens were central to the area’s gang activity. Famous figures like Nick Cannon and rapper Mitchy Slick grew up here. Cannon’s father was even reportedly a member of the Lincoln Park Bloods.

But Lincoln Park is fighting back. Peace rallies have taken place over the years. There are efforts to revitalize the area through the arts. The goal is to reclaim the infamous intersection and rename it “The Four Corners of Life”. This transformation symbolizes the community’s resilience and hope for a brighter future.

Chollas Creek flows through Lincoln Park. The neighborhood’s schools include Lincoln High School John F Kennedy Elementary School Knox Elementary and St Rita’s Catholic School. Many students use the Voluntary Enrollment Exchange Program VEEP to attend schools in wealthier northern areas. This reflects a wider societal issue in San Diego.

Lincoln Park’s story is one of contrasts. A past filled with gang violence crime and hardship coexists with a present of remarkable resilience and community spirit. It’s a neighborhood determined to overcome its challenges and build a better future. The “Four Corners of Death” may be a thing of the past. Lincoln Park’s residents are striving to create a new legacy. They are creating “The Four Corners of Life”.
