Founded in 1910 Bright Hope Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Reverend James H Cammack started a prayer group in a home on North Alder Street. The group quickly outgrew the space. They moved to a larger house. One year later on March 17 1911 the group officially became Bright Hope Baptist Church.
The church bought and renovated two houses. In 1917 they built a new church the Little Church on Alder Street. Reverend Cammack’s death in 1924 slowed progress. Reverend William H Gray Sr took over in 1925. He led the church until his death in 1949.
His son Reverend William H Gray Jr became pastor in 1950. This marked a period of immense growth for Bright Hope. Dr Martin Luther King Jr spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new building in 1963. The new church opened in 1964 at 12th Street and Cecil B Moore Avenue.
Under Reverend Gray Jr’s leadership Bright Hope’s influence spread beyond North Philadelphia. The church became known citywide statewide and nationally. Reverend Gray Jr died in 1972. His son Reverend William H Gray III became the fourth pastor. He later became a US Congressman.
Thousands of Bright Hope members traveled to Washington to celebrate his swearing in. Reverend Gray III chaired the Budget and Finance Committee. He was the highest-ranking Black governmental official. His vision for Bright Hope continued to be realized. Operation Lifeline helped senior citizens. Gray Manor a senior residence opened in 1982.
The Bright Hope Survival Program aided the poor and homeless. It has served over a million meals. Reverend Gray III served as pastor for 35 years retiring in 2007. He passed away in 2013. The church has seen several pastors since then. Each continued the church’s mission and community outreach. Bright Hope Baptist Church remains a beacon of hope in North Philadelphia a place of faith service and community.
