Curious about a park that transformed from farmland to a vibrant community hub? That’s Jefferson Park. This 15.52-acre space in East Harlem has a rich story.
Jefferson Park wasn’t always a park. It was once part of James Roosevelt’s farm. He was a relative of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The farm stretched from 5th Avenue to the East River. It spanned from 110th to 125th Streets.
In 1894, the Board of Aldermen planned Jefferson Park. However, the land wasn’t purchased until 1897. Jefferson Park finally opened in 1902. It aimed to provide organized play for children. East Harlem was then known as “Little Italy”.
Early plans for Jefferson Park included an artificial lake. There was also a marble cottage. Recreational facilities included a pier on the Harlem River. This pier opened in 1899. The park’s development aimed to improve Italian Harlem.
In 1905, recreational facilities officially opened at Jefferson Park. Thousands attended the ceremony. The park cost $3 million to build. This high cost was due to land acquisition. There were separate facilities for boys and girls. Each had a gymnasium, running track, playground and shower area.
A children’s farm garden opened in 1911. It had 1008 plots. Children grew flowers and vegetables here. It taught self-sufficiency.
Robert Moses became commissioner in 1934. He wanted to create new pools. Jefferson Park was included in his plan. The pool project was funded by the Works Progress Administration.
The Thomas Jefferson Pool opened in 1936. It was part of a massive effort. It aimed to improve health conditions. It also sought to provide safe recreation.
Today, Jefferson Park boasts numerous facilities. There are playgrounds and baseball fields. Basketball, volleyball and handball courts are available. You can also find a soccer field and a dog run.
Two pathways cross Jefferson Park from west to east. One pathway features Tomorrow’s Wind. This is a steel sculpture by Melvin Edwards. The other pathway showcases El Arbol de Esperanza. This is a steel-and-bronze sculpture by L. Brower Hatcher.
The Thomas Jefferson Play Center is a landmark. It features a recreation center. It also has a pool. The recreation center has a fitness room. You can also find an afterschool room here.
