The air crackled with anticipation. It was May 29 1969. The Cordobazo Concentracion de SMATA was about to begin. Five thousand strong the SMATA workers stood ready. They had gathered at the Rotonda de Las Flores. Their journey started at the IKA-Renault plant in Santa Isabel. Some came from FIAT. This wasn’t just another day at the factory. This was a protest. A fight for their rights.

The Cordobazo Concentracion de SMATA was a pivotal moment. It was a massive worker and student uprising. The uprising challenged the military dictatorship of General Juan Carlos Ongania. The dictatorship had taken power in 1966. It had crushed workers’ rights. It had frozen wages. It had stifled dissent. The Cordobazo was a response to years of oppression.

The workers marched down Avenida Velez Sarsfield. Their destination was the city center. Their numbers were impressive. Elpidio Torres led the SMATA column. He was a key figure in the Cordobazo. He and Agustin Tosco of Luz y Fuerza had coordinated the protest. They defied the government’s ban on strikes. They knew the risks. They were willing to fight for what they believed in.

The march was met with police resistance. There were clashes. The first victim of the Cordobazo was killed. Maximo Mena a SMATA delegate died in the violence. His death fueled the anger of the workers and students. It ignited the Cordobazo into a full-blown rebellion. The police were quickly overwhelmed. They retreated from the city.

For hours the city was in the hands of the protesters. They burned administrative buildings. They targeted the offices of foreign firms. These firms symbolized the economic policies of the Ongania regime. The workers and students fought bravely. They were united against the dictatorship.

The army arrived to quell the uprising. The Cordobazo Concentracion de SMATA was over but its impact was significant. The uprising showed the government’s weakness. It revealed the deep-seated anger and discontent within society. It sparked a wave of protests across Argentina. The Cordobazo became a symbol of resistance. The event lives on in the memory of the people of Cordoba. It continues to inspire those who fight for justice and freedom.
