New Jersey Institute of Technology

Did the year 1881 hold a secret yearning for technological advancement? Here, at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), that yearning took root. NJIT sprouted from the seeds of necessity, planted by local industrialists and inventors. They envisioned a place where ingenuity could flourish. The New Jersey State Legislature held a contest to find a home for a much-needed technical school. Newark, with the backing of its industrious citizens, rose to the challenge, securing the future of NJIT. Originally named Newark Technical School, the New Jersey Institute of Technology first opened its doors in 1885 with a mere 88 students, mostly attending evening classes. They sought knowledge within the rented walls of a building on West Park Street. The New Jersey Institute of Technology quickly outgrew this space. A fundraising campaign led to the construction of Weston Hall, named for an early benefactor, Edward Weston. He was a prolific inventor and founding trustee of NJIT. The campus expanded in the early 20th century with Colton Hall, a laboratory building. The New Jersey Institute of Technology transitioned from Newark Technical School to Newark College of Engineering in 1930, under the leadership of Allan Cullimore. He guided the institution for almost three decades. Growth continued throughout the 20th century. The campus embraced new buildings and programs, even amidst the challenges of the Depression and World War II. In 1975, the institution adopted its current name, New Jersey Institute of Technology. This reflected its expanding role in research and education. The New Jersey Institute of Technology continued its evolution into the 21st century. It further expanded its campus, adding residence halls, a campus center, and a state-of-the-art Wellness and Events Center. NJIT even acquired the old Central High School building, transforming the surrounding area into a pedestrian walkway. Today, the New Jersey Institute of Technology stands as a testament to its founders’ vision. It has become a renowned public research university with a vibrant campus and a diverse student body. NJIT continues to push the boundaries of knowledge.
