Unearthed secrets whisper from the stones. Before you stands the Mithraeum Königsbrunn. This unassuming structure holds a remarkable history. It’s the only preserved Mithras cult site in all of Bavaria.

Imagine Roman soldiers from the 2nd or 3rd century AD. They gathered here in secret. They practiced a mystery religion. This religion was dedicated to the oriental savior deity Mithras. The Mithraeum’s tuff foundations reveal its age. They are accessible under a protective structure.

Guided tours will reveal the fascinating story of its discovery and excavation. You’ll hear of the secretive cult practiced within these walls. The cult was exclusively for men. It was particularly popular among Roman legionaries. This hidden sanctuary remained unknown for centuries. It was only rediscovered during the creation of the Königsbrunn cemetery in 1976/77.

Interestingly ninety-eight coins were found within the central chamber. Their discovery helped reveal the site’s true significance. Initially the building’s purpose was a mystery. After initial excavations the site was reburied. Years later in 1998 experts identified it as a Mithraeum. Its importance as the only surviving Mithras sanctuary in the former Roman province of Raetia was recognised. The city of Königsbrunn and leading scientists agreed. A protective structure was built to preserve this historical relic.

Today you can visit the Mithraeum. A chart explains its layout. You can walk around this unique site. It stands as a silent testament to a forgotten religion. It offers a glimpse into the lives of Roman soldiers stationed in this area. The Mithraeum Königsbrunn is more than just stones. It is a window into the past.
