What if I told you that the very ground we stand on witnessed the birth of higher education in Argentina? Right here, before us, stands the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, affectionately known as “La Casa de Trejo”. Established on June 19, 1613, it’s not just the oldest university in Argentina, but one of the earliest in the Americas. Imagine, over four centuries ago, the Society of Jesus laid the foundation for this prestigious institution with the Collegium Maximum. While initially lacking the authority to grant degrees, a papal decree from Pope Gregory XV in 1621 changed that, officially marking the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba’s inception. For a century and a half, its focus remained on philosophy and theology, reflecting the Jesuit influence. Only at the end of the 18th century, did law studies enter the scene with the establishment of the School of Law and Social Sciences, diversifying the academic landscape. Interestingly, the university’s nickname, “La Docta,” meaning “The Wise,” stems from Córdoba being home to the only university in the country for over two centuries. Fast forward to 1918, the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba became the epicenter of a movement that reverberated across Latin America: the University Reform. Student-led, this revolution advocated for autonomy, co-governance, and democratization of education, forever shaping higher education in the region. Today, the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba stands as a beacon of knowledge. It boasts fifteen faculties, covering a wide array of disciplines, and caters to a student population exceeding 178,000. This is not just a university; it’s a living testament to centuries of intellectual pursuit, echoing with the voices of scholars across generations.
