At the heart of Münster’s Altstadt, the Aegidiikirche stands as a testament to resilience and transformation. Aegidiikirche has witnessed centuries of change, from its origins as a humble Capuchin monastery church to its current role as a beloved landmark. The Aegidiikirche first welcomed the Capuchin order in 1619. They built a small church dedicated to Saints Mary and Anna. Imagine the quiet murmurings of prayers within those walls, the scent of incense mingling with the earthy aroma of the monastery gardens. Years passed, and in 1724, under the patronage of Ferdinand von Plettenberg, the renowned architect Johann Conrad Schlaun embarked on a grand renovation. He transformed the modest church into the elegant baroque structure we admire today. Schlaun’s Aegidiikirche, completed in 1728, was built with simple yet striking red brick. The Baumberger sandstone facade, with its graceful gable and portal, hints at the baroque grandeur within. The church’s interior is a study in contrasts, blending Schlaun’s classicism with the vibrant artistry of the Nazarene school. The dissolution of the Capuchin monastery in 1811 marked a turning point for Aegidiikirche. The baroque furnishings were auctioned off, leaving the church bare. When the parish of St. Aegidii, whose original church had collapsed, acquired the building, they faced the task of refurnishing it. Two confessionals were salvaged from the old St. Aegidii church, along with a used organ from Kinderhaus. Remarkably, the original pulpit, a masterpiece carved by Brother Stephan under Schlaun’s guidance, was returned to the church as a gift from its purchaser. Picture the scene: the ornate wooden pulpit, depicting the handing over of the order’s rule to St. Francis beneath a sprawling oak tree, once again taking its place within Aegidiikirche. Around 1860, the church’s interior was adorned with Nazarene-style paintings by Edward von Steinle and Dominik Mosler, adding a layer of rich color and symbolism to Schlaun’s minimalist design. These paintings, themed around the Eucharist and its Old Testament precedents, were briefly covered over after World War II but thankfully restored to their former glory in 1983. Today, Aegidiikirche stands proudly in Münster’s Altstadt. Its simple brick exterior, crowned by a ridge turret, belies the treasures within. Inside, the four-aisled hall with its retracted rectangular choir showcases Schlaun’s architectural mastery. The Aegidiikirche continues to serve as a place of worship, hosting masses in both the ordinary and extraordinary forms of the Roman Rite. It also welcomes the Portuguese-speaking community and serves as a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the beauty of transformation.
