Chùa Kim Sơn also known as Chùa Kim Mã stands at 73 Kim Mã Street. It is located in the bustling Ba Đình district of Hanoi. This temple’s story is one of remarkable change. It started as a humble act of compassion.
Let’s journey back. Before this temple stood here, this area was a burial ground. It served as a site for public executions. Villagers from Mã Trại erected a simple shelter. They sought to comfort the wandering souls of the deceased. This act of kindness laid the foundation for what Chùa Kim Sơn is today.
The story takes another turn in 1789. The remains of soldiers killed at Đống Đa were moved here. They were reinterred at the Kim Mã cemetery. This made this ground even more sacred.
In 1881, a storm destroyed the shelter. The community rebuilt it using bricks and tiles. They enshrined Buddhist statues within. It was then known as Chùa Tàu Ngựa. Some called it Chùa Tàu Mã.
A significant transformation happened in 1898. The temple underwent renovations. It was renamed Kim Sơn. Then in 1932, the temple expanded further. The new additions included the Tam Bảo hall. There was also a temple dedicated to the Mother Goddess. A hall called the Vạn Linh was added too.
Today, Sư cô Thích Đàm Tiến oversees Chùa Kim Sơn. She has initiated many renovations and upgrades. The main hall boasts elaborate decorations. The new three-gate entrance is strong and imposing. Precious wooden statues adorn the temple grounds.
