Dawson College

Established in 1969 Dawson College stands proudly in Montreal. It’s the largest CEGEP in Quebec. Over 10000 students attend this urban campus. It occupies 12 acres of green space. Originally housed in a converted factory Dawson College now occupies a former nunnery. This impressive building houses a diverse student body. It reflects Montreal’s multicultural character. The college has a rich history. In 1945 McGill University created a satellite campus. This was Sir William Dawson College. It served servicemen after World War II. It operated for five years in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. The college was named for a former McGill principal. After the General Vocational College Act of 1967 Dawson College became the first English language CEGEP. It opened its doors in September 1969. At first it had 1655 students. The college expanded rapidly. It rented numerous locations across Montreal. The college even used a pharmaceutical factory and a former show mart. Finally in 1982 Dawson College acquired a Mother House. This consolidated its many locations. The new campus opened in 1988. The Selby campus closed in 1997. Dawson College continues to grow. In 2010 and 2018 the college leased additional space in the Pepsi Forum. This accommodated more students. In 2020 Dawson College received a gold rating. This was for leadership in sustainability. The college boasts rooftop gardens and sustainability programs. It even has a student-led composting initiative. Dawson College offers pre-university and technical programs. These prepare students for university or careers. It also has a renowned athletics program. The Dawson Blues compete nationally in various sports. They have a rich history of athletic success. The college unfortunately experienced tragedy in 2006. A mass shooting resulted in the death of a student. Nineteen others were injured. The Peace Garden was created as a living memorial. Dawson College’s story is one of resilience. It’s a testament to its enduring spirit. The college’s commitment to education and its community is truly inspiring.
