“Kuidaore” city. That’s one of Dotonbori’s nicknames. This vibrant district in Osaka is famous for extravagant food spending. Welcome to the Dotonbori Exit a gateway to one of Osaka’s most exciting areas.

Dotonbori’s history dates back to 1612. Nariyasu Doton started canal construction. He aimed to boost commerce by connecting rivers. Sadly, he died during the Siege of Osaka in 1615. Yasui Kuhē and Hirano Tōjirō completed the canal. The new lord of Osaka Castle named it Dotonbori. “Bori” means canal.

The area transformed in 1621. The Tokugawa Shogunate designated Dotonbori as an entertainment district. Playhouses and performance tents flocked here. By 1662, Dotonbori had six Kabuki theaters and five Bunraku theaters. Restaurants and cafes boomed. They catered to the many tourists and entertainment seekers.

Today Dotonbori is still a major attraction. Its eccentric atmosphere and illuminated signboards are iconic. One of the most famous is the Glico running man sign. It symbolizes Osaka.

Many restaurants line Dotonbori. Kinryu Ramen stands out with its giant golden dragon billboards. It is open 24 hours and offers a free garlic and kimchi bar. Kani Doraku is famous for its moving crab billboard. Otakoya is a popular takoyaki stand. Zubora-ya once featured a huge blowfish lantern. Hariju is a long-standing beef restaurant. Imai has been serving udon since 1946.

Kuidaore Taro is a mechanical drum-playing clown. He was installed in 1950. Ebisu Tower features a ferris wheel with the god Ebisu. Illuminated signs form gateways above Dotonbori Street.

Ebisubashi Bridge is a popular meeting spot. It connects shopping districts. The Glico Man sign is nearby. Dotonbori is more than just a place. It is an experience of Osaka’s lively spirit. Be prepared for crowds and dazzling sights.
