“A century of stories whispers from these walls” The University of Queensland Avalon Theatre Precinct stands before you. More than just a building it’s a living testament to Brisbane’s rich cultural heritage.

Originally built in the 1920s it began as a church hall for the local Anglican parish. Later it transformed into a community hall and picture theatre. Imagine the laughter and hushed whispers of moviegoers filling this space.

In 1963 the University of Queensland acquired the Avalon. It quickly became a hub for drama performances and student productions. Famous actors like Geoffrey Rush and Michael Caton graced its stage. The iconic Go-Betweens also performed there.

The Avalon closed in 2004. Time took its toll on the aging building. An 18-month refurbishment breathed new life into this landmark. Heritage experts worked closely with the university. They carefully restored the original weatherboard window frames brickwork and front steps. The Art Deco facade was recreated to maintain the theatre’s identity.

Today the Avalon Theatre is a unique teaching and performance space. The University of Queensland School of Communication and Arts uses it. The Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble also calls it home. This resident company started here in 2001. They produced their first show As You Like It in 2002. Their last production before the closure was Pericles in 2004.

Now the Avalon boasts state-of-the-art equipment. It features two soundproofed spaces. One is a large performance space seating 112. The other is a smaller space for up to 50 people. Retractable seating makes it adaptable for teaching and performances.

The foyer showcases vibrant artwork. Programs and posters from past productions celebrate the Avalon’s history. It’s a reminder of its enduring connection to the St Lucia community. Associate Professor Rob Pensalfini a UQ lecturer since 1999 has a deep connection with the theatre. He co-founded the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble. He describes returning to the Avalon as coming home. The upcoming production of Julius Caesar is particularly poignant. It explores themes of tyranny honour friendship and populism. It’s a thrilling production filled with visual imagery and sound. The Avalon Theatre’s story continues. It’s a vibrant place for students and the wider community. It’s a place where history meets the future. This is a theatre that thrives. It’s a theatre that continues to inspire and entertain.
