Did you know this imposing building before us was once the Bekleidungsamt Bahrenfeld? It played a crucial role in Hamburg’s military history.

The Bekleidungsamt Bahrenfeld, or clothing office, wasn’t always the residential complex known as Westend Village. Let’s step back in time to the early 20th century. Bahrenfeld was transforming from a quiet village into a military hub for the German Army.

In the years 1901 to 1904, this very Bekleidungsamt Bahrenfeld was constructed. Its purpose? To supply uniforms and equipment to the IX. Army Corps. Imagine the hustle and bustle. Soldiers coming and going. Wagons filled with fabrics and boots. The Bekleidungsamt Bahrenfeld was at the heart of it all.

The location of the Bekleidungsamt Bahrenfeld was strategically chosen. It stood southeast of the intersection of Luruper Chaussee and Theodorstrasse. Directly across from the Feldartillerie-Kaserne, or Field Artillery Barracks. This proximity ensured efficient logistics for the military.

As you look at the architecture, you may notice the neo-Renaissance style. This “Fabrikschloss” was constructed between 1901 and 1904. The military administration designed it this way.

Interestingly, after World War I, the need for military facilities diminished. The Reichswehr was limited in size. The Bekleidungsamt Bahrenfeld found a new purpose. In 1930, the British American Tobacco, or BAT, moved into the buildings. Cigarettes replaced uniforms within these walls.

However, this wasn’t the end of the Bekleidungsamt Bahrenfeld’s military connections. With the rearmament after 1933, the barracks were again used by Wehrmacht and police units. The building continued to serve military purposes.

Fast forward to more recent times. After BAT moved out, the area was redeveloped. The Bekleidungsamt Bahrenfeld became “Westend Village”. These are now modern apartments.

Today, as you stand here, you are witnessing a transformation. A place that once clothed soldiers now provides homes. The Bekleidungsamt Bahrenfeld has transitioned from military necessity to modern living. A testament to Bahrenfeld’s evolving story. It is a part of Bahrenfeld’s history that is still visible today.
