“Lost elegance, resurrected revelry.” That’s the story of Søpavillonen. This beautiful building graces the embankment between Peblinge Lake and Sankt Jørgens Lake. It stands as a testament to Copenhagen’s ever-evolving spirit. Søpavillonen first opened its doors in 1894. It was designed by the prolific Vilhelm Dahlerup, the architect behind iconic landmarks like the Royal Theater and Statens Museum for Kunst. Imagine the scene: elegant skaters gliding across the frozen Peblinge Lake. They sought refuge in this charming clubhouse, designed in a playful historicist style. It was a blend of Gothic and Turkish influences, a whimsical stage set against the backdrop of the lakes. Søpavillonen wasn’t always a nightclub. It began as a haven for the Copenhagen Ice Skating Club. They had used the lakes for skating since 1870. This building provided a permanent home, replacing the temporary wooden sheds they erected each winter. The club enjoyed their exclusive clubhouse until 1960. Then they moved to Østerbro. Søpavillonen then took on a new life. It became home to the legendary smørrebrød restaurant, Oskar Davidsen. In 1979, a bold proposal emerged to replace Søpavillonen with a swimming center. The design was by none other than Jørn Utzon, the architect of the Sydney Opera House. Public outcry saved Søpavillonen from demolition. It was listed as a landmark in 1984. Today, Søpavillonen thrives as a popular nightclub and restaurant. It’s known locally as “Klamydiaslottet,” or the Chlamydia Castle. While the nickname might raise an eyebrow, it speaks to the building’s enduring presence in Copenhagen’s nightlife. Søpavillonen has witnessed the changing tides of the city. It has served as a clubhouse, a restaurant, and a nightclub. It stands as a reminder that even amidst change, a touch of history and a dash of playful spirit can create a truly unforgettable experience.
