Did you ever hear of a football club named after a ghost town? I’m talking about Club Atlético Ituzaingó, right here in Punta del Este. This club carries a piece of local history you wouldn’t believe. Club Atlético Ituzaingó wasn’t always located in bustling, modern Punta del Este. The club takes its name from the original name of this very area, Villa Ituzaingó. A small settlement founded in 1829, Villa Ituzaingó faded into history, officially becoming Punta del Este in 1909. The club, however, kept the spirit of the old town alive, adopting its name when it was founded in 1951. Club Atlético Ituzaingó started its journey in the lower division but quickly ascended to the Primera División in 1952. Their early years were a bit of a rollercoaster, with relegations and promotions. Club Atlético Ituzaingó found its footing in 1961. They’ve held their position in the top division ever since. They’ve also earned several titles, winning the Liga Capital de Fútbol de Maldonado four times. Club Atlético Ituzaingó then achieved victory in the Liga Mayor de Fútbol de Maldonado five times. And here’s a fun fact: In the year 2000, they clinched the Copa Nacional de Clubes, going undefeated throughout the entire tournament. Now, every good football club needs a rival. Club Atlético Ituzaingó’s is Centro Cultural y Democrático Punta del Este. Although Ituzaingó usually comes out on top, their rival holds the record for the biggest win, a whopping 12-3. But Club Atlético Ituzaingó isn’t just about football. They’re a vibrant hub for the community, with basketball, tennis, volleyball, and various social and cultural activities. Even the internationally renowned tango singer Gustavo Nocetti started his journey right here, singing his first tangos as a teenager at the club’s venue. Club Atlético Ituzaingó embodies the resilience and spirit of this region. They carry the torch of a vanished town, keeping its memory alive with every match played on their home turf. So, next time you hear the name Ituzaingó, remember that it represents more than just a football club. It’s a testament to history, a tribute to a town that lives on through the passion of its namesake.
