Hidden amongst the bustling streets of Bucharest lies Tei a neighbourhood rich in history and charm. Tei’s name originates from Lacul Tei Linden Tree Lake a picturesque body of water once surrounded by lush linden woods. These trees still grace the area their fragrant blossoms perfuming the air each spring.

Imagine the early 1800s. Tei belonged to the powerful Ghica family. They erected the elegant Ghica Tei palace in 1822. The Orthodox Teiul Doamnei Ghica Church followed in 1833. These structures stand as testaments to the family’s influence and the neighbourhood’s early development.

Around 1900 Bulgarian gardeners known as sârbi purchased land south of Calea Lacul Teiului now Bulevardul Lacul Tei. They cultivated vibrant gardens transforming the landscape. After World War I houses sprang up north and southeast of the boulevard.

The communist era dramatically reshaped Tei. Apartment blocks rose transforming the neighbourhood. The Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest found a home in Tei. The State Circus also established itself there adding a touch of vibrant entertainment to the area.

Tei has undergone a remarkable transformation in recent years. It evolved from a middle-class neighbourhood into a more affluent one. Numerous mansions now dot the streets reflecting its elevated status. As we stand here today we can sense the layers of history within Tei. From its aristocratic past to its communist era transformation and its current upscale evolution. Tei encapsulates Bucharest’s dynamic evolution its ability to adapt and thrive through the ages. Its story is etched in its architecture its atmosphere and the lingering scent of linden blossoms. Tei remains a unique and fascinating part of Bucharest.
