“Incredible transformation” is what they say about Black Rock Playground. Today we will explore this revitalized space. It is located in the heart of Soundview. This playground is more than just swings and slides. It represents community investment and remembrance.
The Black Rock Playground underwent a significant renovation. It cost approximately 1.9 million dollars. The renovation was part of New York City’s Community Parks Initiative. This initiative focuses on reinvesting in smaller public parks throughout the Bronx. The mayor’s office funded the project.
The revamped Black Rock Playground now boasts many new features. There is new play equipment for kids of all ages. Swings offer a classic playground experience. A water spray area provides relief on hot days. Comfortable seating areas allow parents and caregivers to relax.
Local residents and students from nearby P.S. 119 benefit greatly from this space. Community Board 9 played a vital role in the playground’s design. They collaborated with the NYC Parks Department. The board even proposed renaming the park. It would honor FDNY-EMT Yadira Arroyo.
Yadira Arroyo tragically died in the line of duty on March 16, 2017. She was killed near Black Rock Playground. Arroyo left behind five sons. She was assigned to Station 26. She often fed the homeless in McKinley Square Park. It was across the street from her station.
Community Board 9 strongly advocated for this renaming. They sent a letter to Mitchell Silver. He was the NYC Parks Department commissioner. The letter stated that recognizing Arroyo was the least the community could do. The board hoped to officially rename the park Yadira Arroyo Park by March 2020.
Assemblywoman Karines Reyes supported the renaming. She stated that EMT Yadira Arroyo was a true public servant. Reyes added that Arroyo gave her life for the community. Reyes, a registered nurse, deeply respected Arroyo’s sacrifice. She deemed renaming Black Rock Playground in her honor a fitting tribute.
While awaiting the decision, children enjoy the upgraded Black Rock Playground. The playground includes a water sprinkler area. It connects play areas for older and younger children. New plantings enhance the space. Improved drainage and water supply systems are also notable upgrades.
Mitchell Silver, then commissioner said the transformation of Black Rock Playground is incredible. He recalled its previous state. He expressed his delight in seeing the space renewed for parkgoers of every generation.
