“Empowering individuals to find their purpose in Christ” echoes in the very foundation of the First Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church. Founded over 130 years ago this church has a rich history. It stands as a beacon of faith in Savannah.
First Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church began humbly. In 1881, Deacon Samuel and Sister Etta Williams opened their home for worship at 41st and Anderson Street. Their dedication led them to purchase property at 219 West 45th Street. There they erected a temple to gain souls for the Kingdom of God. Claiborne Curtis became the first pastor.
The church faced many challenges. A storm wrecked the church in 1909. Services were then held in a small building behind the church. It was rebuilt in 1916. Tragedy struck again in 1938 when fire destroyed the church. But the congregation’s spirit remained strong.
A new church was built in 1947. It was dedicated in September 1950. This marked a new chapter.
In 1978, the church purchased property on West 52nd Street. They planned to build a new house of worship. The congregation celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1981. The theme was “Let your light so shine before men so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.” Rev. N.N. Boles was the pastor at the time.
Rev Gregory A Tyson Sr became pastor in 2002. Under his leadership, the church on 45th Street was completely renovated. In 2004, the church bought property on ACL Blvd. The vision was to build a new, larger church.
February 3 2008 was a day of celebration. The church held its groundbreaking ceremony for the future home on ACL Blvd. On December 13 2008 the congregation marched. They moved from their historic location on West 45th Street to their new home at 4370 ACL Blvd. This symbolized a step into the future.
In 2011, the church expanded. They purchased additional property on ACL Blvd. That same year, they acquired two buses named Grace and Mercy. These buses helped in community outreach.
The church has always valued its youth. Over the years, several youth ministries flourished. These included the Gregory A Tyson Sr Youth and Young Adult Choir. There were also Boyz II Men Ministries, S.I.S. Ministries the TWIST Scholarship Ministry and Vacation Bible School.
August 24 2014 was a significant day. Four elders and nine deacons were ordained. This strengthened the church’s leadership.
February 22 2015 brought sadness. Pastor Gregory A Tyson Sr passed away. During his 12 years as pastor, he had a profound impact. He guided the youth and taught the word of God. His legacy lives on in the community and the church.
After months of searching, a new leader was chosen. In December 2015, Pastor Damion P Gordon Sr was announced as the new pastor. He was installed on March 20 2016.
Today, First Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church continues its mission. It is committed to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. It empowers individuals to find their purpose in Christ. The church welcomes all. It strives to make a positive impact on the community sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with everyone. It prepares God’s people to spread the gospel to all nations.
