Remember when this area was an American military base? Today we stand in Sheridan Park. It is a vibrant public space. This park has a unique history. It transformed from a military area to a community hub.
Before 1998 the area was the Sheridan Kaserne. It housed US troops. The US military left. Augsburg gained land. The city developed a new plan. It created the Sheridan Park.
The Sheridan Park covers over 15 hectares. It is between residential and commercial areas. This reflects Augsburg’s growth. It was the first time since Roman times. Augsburg was free of military barracks. The Romans had military camps here 2,000 years ago.
Today Sheridan Park is a place for everyone. New trees were planted. Winding paths were created. Playgrounds and sports fields were built. The old command center still stands. The chapel and officers’ mess are also here. They blend into the park’s design.
Christa enjoys Sheridan Park. She lives nearby. She says it is great for kids. They can play and run around. Adults can relax. People can walk or jog. They can chat with dog walkers. It is a beautiful place.
In summer Sheridan Park buzzes with activity. Children play. Mothers enjoy the sun. Grandfathers search for grandchildren in the hedge maze. Teenagers use the skate park. They play beach volleyball and basketball. People of all ages relax, play sports, and have fun.
The park supports community life. However tensions can arise. The city uses urban conflict management. This makes Sheridan Park a welcoming place. It meets the needs of residents and visitors.
The goal is to strengthen social bonds. People should experience the park positively. Measures are developed with residents and park visitors. This includes construction. The city wants to promote peaceful co-existence. They solve conflicts through moderation. This strengthens community.
The Sheridan-Kaserne had three barracks from 1934 to 1936. These were General-Kneußl-Infanteriekaserne, Luftnachrichtenkaserne, and Heeresnachrichtenkaserne. The US Army united them in 1953 and named it Sheridan-Kaserne. It was named after Carl V. Sheridan. He received the Medal of Honor.
After the US Army left, new buildings were built. A primary school was built in 2011. It is called Westparkschule. It includes a kindergarten and a daycare center. The Apostelin-Junia-Kirche opened in 2012. Other buildings include the Sheridan-Center and the Sheridan Tower.
Some old buildings remain. The former command center is used by a Christian group. They hold services and run a youth center. The officers’ mess also remains. It is under historical protection since 2006.
The officers’ mess has a fresco of the Battle of Lechfeld. It was created in 1939 by Otto Michael Schmitt. He also created the facade of the Weberhaus. The fresco was painted over but later restored.
Halle 116 was a vehicle hall. It was also a subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp. From 1944 to 1945 prisoners were forced to work. Today the city owns Halle 116. It is a place of learning. It opened on October 28, 2023.
The Chapel was built in the 1950s. It was to be demolished but is now protected. The Sheridan Park shows how a military area became a community space. It offers recreation and remembers history.
