A century ago, the shadow of World War I loomed large over Staten Island. In Port Richmond, a small triangle of land became a poignant symbol of sacrifice: Egbert Triangle. Egbert Triangle commemorates Arthur Stanley Egbert, a young man from a prominent Staten Island family. He worked as a conductor for the Richmond Light and Rail Road Company before joining the Navy. Tragically, he perished when the USS President Lincoln sank in 1918. The triangle isn’t just about Arthur though. It honors all the residents of Graniteville and Port Richmond who lost their lives in the Great War. Originally named Egbert Square in 1929, its name was later changed to Egbert Triangle by Parks Commissioner Stern, to more accurately reflect its shape. It’s a quiet spot, bordered by Richmond Avenue, Forest Avenue, and Willowbrook Road. The Egbert family’s roots on Staten Island run deep, going all the way back to 1660 with the arrival of Covert Egbert. Generations later, one of his descendants, Arthur, would have this quiet corner of the island named in his honor, a testament to the lasting impact of war on a community.
