“What secrets lie within those ancient walls?” a curious visitor might ask, peering up at the majestic Wat Amarit. Built centuries ago during the Ayutthaya period, Wat Amarit stands as a quiet sentinel overlooking the bustling streets of Bangkok. The temple’s origins remain shrouded in mystery, with no records existing of its original founder. What is known is that Wat Amarit was once known as “Wat Bang Wa Noi,” paired with the nearby Wat Bangwa Yai.

During King Taksin’s reign, Wat Amarit’s status was elevated to a royal monastery, a testament to its growing importance. Years later, the temple received its current name, “Wat Amarinthraram,” meaning “Temple of the Emerald Buddha.” However, locals continued to refer to it with a more affectionate name – “Wat Luang Pho Bot Noi.” This endearing nickname pays homage to the revered Luang Pho Bot Noi, a Sukhothai-style Buddha statue housed in the temple’s chapel.

Wat Amarit holds a special place in the hearts of the Thai people. It is a place of peace, solace, and spiritual reflection. This sacred sanctuary even served as a temporary residence for Chuan Leekpai, a former Prime Minister of Thailand, during his student days. While the temple bears the scars of World War II, with only the chapel surviving Allied bombings, its spirit remains unbroken. The resilience of Wat Amarit serves as a subtle reminder of the enduring strength of the human spirit and the enduring power of faith.
