Isn’t it amazing how a simple idea can blossom into something so culturally rich? We are standing before the Fundaçaõ Castro Alves. This foundation is more than just a building. It is a testament to one man’s vision.
Let me tell you about Comendador Manuel Maria Castro Alves. He lived from 1935 to 1998. In 1971, he initiated the Centro de Arte e Cultura Popular de São Pedro de Bairro. He wanted to give local children opportunities that he missed as a youth.
Imagine this. The center initially focused on music education. But there was a problem. The center lacked suitable facilities for teaching music. So, Comendador Castro Alves started building. He created classrooms, meeting rooms and practice spaces. In 1974, the Escola de Música’s auditorium opened. It became the permanent home for the Centro de Arte e Cultura Popular.
The center then hosted many concerts and shows. It significantly expanded its cultural activities. These activities included education and free time for young people. All visitors applauded enthusiastically.
In June 1979, the center expanded again. They created the Escola Oficina de Cerâmica Artística. Júlio Resende and Francisco Laranjo were major promoters. Fernando Sousa and Fernando Lanhas also helped. This led to the Museu de Cerâmica Artística.
The Escola de Cerâmica Artística trained over 30 children. They became excellent artisans. Their artistic quality led to the creation of the Museu de Cerâmica Artística.
Architect Fernando Lanhas designed and organized the museum. It opened in 1987. The Museu de Cerâmica Artística features two main collections. One is pottery and the other is ceramic sculptures. There are 1336 pieces in total. They are displayed across three rooms. The rooms cover 400 square meters.
