Founded in 1926 The Church on the Way has a rich history. It began as a tent revival led by Life Bible College students. This small group eventually moved to a building on Erwin Street. Later a new sanctuary was built at 14344 Sherman Way. This was completed in 1951 with a celebratory parade. By 1969 the church faced challenges. It had a small mostly elderly congregation. Howard Carson the senior pastor stepped down due to illness. Jack Hayford became the interim pastor then the permanent senior pastor in 1971. Under Hayford’s leadership the church experienced tremendous growth. The sanctuary needed remodeling in 1974 to accommodate the larger crowds. A new larger sanctuary was built at 14300 Sherman Way in 1981. The church continued to grow. In 1987 it purchased a neighboring property from the First Baptist Church of Van Nuys. Jack Hayford retired in 1999. His son-in-law Scott Bauer succeeded him. Tragically Bauer died suddenly in 2003. Jim Tolle served as senior pastor from 2004 to 2010. He led both English and Spanish congregations. Ricky Temple briefly led the English congregation. Tim Clark became senior pastor in 2014 and continues to lead The Church on the Way. This church has been influential in the Charismatic Movement. Its services were regularly televised on the Trinity Broadcasting Network. It also had its own local radio station. The Church on the Way owns the iconic Hollywood Cross a landmark in Hollywood California. The Church on the Way is a Pentecostal church affiliated with the Foursquare Church. Today it remains a vibrant and active part of the community. It continues to serve and minister to its congregation and the wider Los Angeles area. Its enduring legacy speaks volumes about faith community and impact.
