Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Pacoima has watched over its community for decades. For over 20 years, the community has been trying to build a new church. The original church only seated about 200 people. Parishioners often stood outside in the rain for Mass.
In June 2023, Archbishop José H. Gomez attended a ground-blessing ceremony. The ceremony marked the start of construction for a new Guardian Angel Catholic Church. The new 17000-square-foot church is on track to open in the summer of 2024. It will seat about 1300 people. The project includes parking for over 200 cars, parish offices, meeting rooms, and widened streets.
Gerardo Ascencio has been a Guardian Angel parishioner for over 40 years. He met his wife at a church fiesta. Their three sons attend Guardian Angel School. Ascencio said parishioners never gave up on Guardian Angel.
Bishop Gerald Wilkerson played a key role in the new church project. In 1998, Father Juan Enriquez told Wilkerson about plans for a new church. Wilkerson asked the 55 parishes in his region to help purchase the land. They raised $2.5 million. In 2009, a six-acre spot was bought.
