Did you know that St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School in East Kilbride boasts a history richer than its modern facade suggests? Right here before you stands a testament to educational evolution. It’s a story of mergers and growth. A story of two schools becoming one.

St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School opened in 2007. It’s a Roman Catholic comprehensive school. It’s situated near St Bride’s Roman Catholic church. The church itself a striking structure built in 1964 by Gillespie Kidd & Coia. This impressive building stands as a neighbour to the school.

The school’s creation involved a merger. It combined two existing schools. St Bride’s RC High School previously occupied the Platthorn Drive site. St Andrew’s RC High School was located at Scholar’s Gate in Greenhills. The decision to merge these two schools wasn’t without its critics. Some voiced concerns about potentially compromising academic standards. In 2002 St Bride’s ranked highly in national league tables. St Andrew’s position was significantly lower. This difference highlights the unique challenges faced during the merger process.

St Bride’s original building a single structure had seen many additions. These additions included art blocks technical blocks and science blocks. A large ‘New Block’ housing business studies opened in 1971. A PE block completed the campus in 1975/6. At its peak the school was one of the largest in Scotland with 2220 pupils. The opening of St Andrew’s High School reduced its numbers. It expanded to accommodate the increase.

For a time St Bride’s even used a temporary annex. The annex housed the first-year pupils. This was due to its Platthorn Drive campus reaching full capacity. The temporary location was the closed Old High School on Old Mill Road. This site is now part of South Lanarkshire College.

St Andrew’s and St Bride’s High School. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a story of adaptation and unity. It’s a continuing legacy of education in East Kilbride. A legacy built upon the foundations of two schools. A testament to the enduring power of faith and learning.
