University Lutheran Church

Tucked away in the heart of University City, the University Lutheran Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant hub, a testament to a rich history intertwined with the city’s academic pulse. The University Lutheran Church stands as a beacon of welcome, embracing students from institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, Drexel, Temple, and others. This inclusive spirit has been a cornerstone of the church since its inception. The church’s story begins in the late 19th century, a period of westward expansion in Philadelphia. Reverend William Ashmeade Schaeffer of St. Stephen’s Church recognized the growing community around 46th and Woodland Avenue and saw a need. The first service, held above a meat shop, drew 29 souls seeking spiritual sustenance. This humble beginning paved the way for the University Lutheran Church we see today. The church’s journey wasn’t without its trials. Relocations, fires, and even a merger with the Lutheran Campus Ministry in the 1960s shaped its identity. Despite these challenges, the University Lutheran Church remained committed to its mission. It fostered a sense of community, offering weekly events like Feast Incarnate, Theology on Tap, Chill Night, and Bible Study. These gatherings provided opportunities for connection, fellowship, and spiritual growth. The University Lutheran Church is more than just bricks and mortar.
