Can a place hold the echoes of two thousand years? Here at Đình Thần Xuân Dực, it certainly feels that way. This communal house, nestled in the heart of Hanoi’s Gia Lâm district, whispers tales of ancient deities and royal decrees. Đình Thần Xuân Dực isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to Vietnam’s rich cultural heritage.

Đình Thần Xuân Dực honors two prominent figures: Nam Phổ and Lý Tam Lang. Nam Phổ, a son of Lạc Long Quân, is said to have descended to the plains of Xuân Ổ, shaping the land and its people. Legend says that in 40 AD, during the Two Sisters’ Uprising against the Han Dynasty, Nam Phổ appeared to the Trung Sisters in a dream, offering his aid. The sisters triumphed, and upon becoming rulers, they acknowledged Nam Phổ’s contribution. They commissioned the construction of Đình Thần Xuân Dực and bestowed upon him the title of “Tuyền Linh Đại Vương”.

Lý Tam Lang adds another layer to the rich tapestry of Đình Thần Xuân Dực. A scholar and military strategist during the Lý Dynasty, he served the king with distinction, even quelling a rebellion in the south. Upon his return, he chose a quieter life, establishing a school in Xuân Dực. He educated the local children and eventually passed away, revered and remembered by the community. King Lê Thái Tổ honored him with the title “Thượng Đẳng Phúc Thần”.

The very structure of Đình Thần Xuân Dực tells a story. Built on elevated ground, the đình’s main entrance faces south, preceded by a spacious courtyard. The main hall, or Đại Đình, is a grand structure with four sweeping, curved roofs that seem to bow towards the water. Connected to the main hall is the Hậu Cung, a three-room building built in the traditional “bít đốc” style, its roof beams intricately carved. The complex has undergone several renovations over the centuries, each layer adding to the historical narrative. A restoration in 1934 is documented on the main beam and pillars.

Đình Thần Xuân Dực also holds a remarkable collection of 33 royal decrees, spanning the reigns of the Lê, Tây Sơn, and Nguyễn dynasties. The oldest of these decrees dates back to the Cảnh Trị era (1633-1671), a tangible link to Vietnam’s royal past. This đình isn’t just a place of worship. It is a treasure trove of Vietnamese history and craftsmanship, recognized as a national historical and cultural relic in 1994. Each year on the 10th day of the third lunar month, the village holds a grand festival, a vibrant celebration of the deities and the enduring spirit of Đình Thần Xuân Dực.
