Considering a church known for its gospel choir? That’s Saint James the Apostle Catholic Church. It stands at 1920 N. Martin L. King Blvd in Las Vegas. Saint James the Apostle Catholic Church has a unique history. It reflects the evolving community it serves.
Saint James the Apostle Catholic Church started in 1940. It was the second Catholic Church in Las Vegas. The original building was small and concrete. It stood at H and Morgan streets. Initially, most parishioners were Latino. By the mid-1960s, the parish became largely Black. Saint James the Apostle Catholic Church became a cornerstone of the Black community. Socially active clergy served the church during the 1960s and 1970s. They assisted the community with prevalent social issues.
The church expanded its facilities over time. In 1944, a parish hall and kitchen were added. These were made from gang houses donated by Union Pacific RR. Three more additions followed through 1952. During this period, Saint James helped establish St. Viator and Our Lady of Las Vegas parishes.
By the 1990s, Saint James the Apostle Catholic Church had outgrown its original location. The Diocese sold the property. The church moved to its current location on Martin Luther King at Lake Mead Boulevard.
Today Saint James the Apostle Catholic Church remains vibrant. It celebrates its Black identity. The church is renowned for its exceptional gospel choir. You can experience their uplifting performances during Sunday services. Services are at 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. The 8 a.m. service features the Community Choir. The 11 a.m. service showcases the Gospel Choir.
