The Chiesa della Beata Vergine Immacolata is more than just a place of worship. It’s a landmark in Milan’s rich tapestry. Its construction a project of Luigi and Felice Nava began in 1931. These architects also worked on the adjacent convent. The church’s dedication in 1941 by Archbishop Ildefonso Schuster cemented its place in the community. Imagine the grandeur of that day. The air filled with hymns the scent of incense.

The church boasts a Latin cross plan with a single nave and side chapels. The transept culminates in two semi-circular chapels. One is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. The other to the Sacred Heart. Notice the beautiful whitewashed surfaces. The brick frames accentuate the building’s geometry. Many chapels feature exquisite marble and mosaics. The main facade a striking display of brickwork is marked by projections and recesses. These architectural details highlight the building’s imposing height. The impressive staircase leading to the entrance adds to its monumental character.

The central entrance is set forward. It’s like a giant pronau. Inside you’ll find a recessed niche with a semi-circular arch. This area is completely clad in stone slabs. Three windows punctuate the main facade. Two are rectangular. The central one echoes the design of the niche. Between the central portal and window you’ll see a 1950 mosaic. It depicts the Madonna welcoming St Francis and St Anthony.

The interior is just as captivating. Over the years the side chapels have been embellished. There’s the Chapel of the Crucifix the Chapel of St Anthony and the Chapel of St Francis to name but a few. The left side holds the Baptistery and chapels dedicated to St Rita and the Holy Family. The Sacro Cuore Chapel completes the ensemble.

The presbytery underwent a significant renovation in 1980. Architect Marino Santariello oversaw the replacement of the main altar. Even the crypt beneath the church saw restoration in 2005. The boiler was moved to the oratory’s roof. These seemingly small details reveal a deep commitment to preserving this magnificent structure.
