“A gateway to NSW and the town of Barham.” That’s how the Barham Bridge is described. We are standing before a piece of history a vital link between New South Wales and Victoria. The Barham Bridge isn’t just a way to cross the Murray River. It’s a symbol of connection.
The Murray River bridge at Barham was opened in 1905. The first piles were driven in 1903. It was a project born from the need to connect communities. This bridge carries Main Road across the Murray River. It joins Barham in New South Wales and Koondrook in Victoria. Locals also call it the Barham Bridge over Murray River.
Back in the 1840s graziers settled around the Murray near Barham. By 1850 the best riverfront land was taken. A ferry was established for stock and people. The Barham station needed a way to cross the river.
The Barham Bridge stands as a testament to ingenuity. It features a timber truss and a steel lift span. The bridge is generally two lanes wide. Its main axis runs north to south.
Look closely at the three main spans. Notice the lift span supported by cast iron piers. Observe the timber approach spans at each end. These rest on timber trestle piers. The 17.8-metre lift span is of lattice steel construction.
The Barham Bridge’s lift span design is unique. The counterweights are on the main axis side of the supporting columns. The cross girders on top are curved and decorated. Ernest de Burgh made changes to Percy Allan’s original design.
The other two main spans measure 31.7 metres. They are timber trusses of the de Burgh type. This truss design used a steel bottom chord. Steel cross girders and longitudinal stringers support the deck. The deck itself is made of timber.
The bridge has aesthetic significance. Its setting is outstanding. It dominates the town with its height and mass. The surrounding parklands and trees enhance its beauty.
The Barham Bridge holds social significance. It connects Barham and Koondrook. People commute across it for various services. The bridge is a focal point between the town and river. It reminds people of the river transport days. Crowds gather when river traffic passes through.
The Barham Bridge received a Historic Engineering Marker. Engineers Australia recognized it for its engineering heritage. KI Studio developed concepts for the bridge modification. They also created a heritage interpretation strategy. The bridge was rejuvenated to increase its loading capacity. Its lifespan was extended as well.
Feature lighting now illuminates the bridge at night. It creates a landmark. Signage tells stories of the river environment and transport. The designs reflect Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal heritage.
