Did the walls of Wesley Methodist Church ever hear the clatter of a rope factory? Here at the corner of Dowling and Webster, it’s hard to imagine such a humble start. Wesley Methodist Church has a history as winding as the streets of old Houston. It began over a century ago, tucked away in the back of a rope factory at Milam and Congress streets. A small group, mostly women, nurtured the fledgling congregation. Their determination laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Houston’s Third Ward. The church’s journey wasn’t a straight path. From the rope factory, they moved to a small “box house” on Preston Street. Officially dedicated as Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church in 1877, the congregation sought a permanent home. They found it, or so they thought, in 1897 at Texas Avenue and Chartres Streets. Just nine years later, progress, in the form of the Houston Belt and Terminal Co., forced another move. The current site at Dowling and Webster became the church’s new home in 1906, giving rise to the affectionately nicknamed “Stone Church” or “Rock Church.” Even this wasn’t the end of the journey. In 1925, the “Stone Church” was demolished to make way for a new vision. The congregation worshipped in the Old Jones Barn, a former movie theater, during construction. The project stretched through the 1930s, with services held at Jack Yates High School while the second floor of the new church remained unfinished for an astonishing 27 years. Finally, in 1952, the sanctuary we see today opened its doors. Through the decades, dynamic leaders like Rev. Dr. E.E. Coates, who served for 37 years, guided the church. More recently, Rev. Dr. Leo Griffin ushered in another era of change, even shortening the name to Wesley African Methodist Episcopal Church. He oversaw the acquisition of additional facilities, upgraded the technology, and implemented social programs to serve the Third Ward community. Wesley Methodist Church stands as a testament to the power of faith and resilience. It’s a reminder that even from the humblest beginnings, a community can build something lasting and impactful.
