For centuries the Trinity River flowed freely. Small bands of the Akokisa Native American tribe called this land home. They understood the river’s rhythms its moods its power. Then came Alonso de León in the late 1600s. He gave the river its name Trinity. A name that echoed across history.
Today the Trinity River is a lifeline for Houston. Over 22 reservoirs built along its course provide much of the city’s water. The river’s frequent flooding left its mark on the land. It created rich ultisols soil. This soil nourishes the incredible diversity of plant and animal life found here. The Trinity Bottomlands are a vital part of this ecosystem. A sanctuary for wildlife. A testament to nature’s resilience.
Imagine the vibrant ecosystem. Nearly 650 different kinds of plants thrive here. More than 275 bird species make their home in the bottomland hardwood forests and wetlands. These include migratory birds like the Summer Tanager and the Vermilion Flycatcher. Even rarer birds like the Henslow’s Sparrow find refuge here. The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge protects this biodiversity. It is one of only fourteen priority-one bottomland sites identified for protection.
Listen. Can you hear it? The chorus of frogs. Though you might not see them hummingbirds and butterflies are more readily seen. The river itself is a home to various species of fish. Bass Crappie and Catfish can be found in Champion Lake a manmade lake within the bottomlands. It has a 150-foot fishing pier. A popular spot for anglers.
