Atop this hill a silent sentinel stands. This is Har Adar a place steeped in history and conflict.

Har Adar isn’t just a settlement. It’s a story etched into the very land. A story of battles won and lost. A story of a small archaeological park. This park reveals a building complex. This complex dates back to the fifth to the mid-first centuries BCE. It includes a Persian-era fort and a Hellenistic-era farmhouse. Later a wing was added during the Ottoman period.

But Har Adar’s story isn’t solely about ancient ruins. It’s also about World War II. It was known then as Radar Hill. British military installation stood here. Local Jewish military believed it was an anti-aircraft radar defending Jerusalem. It wasn’t. It was a radio relay station.

The hill changed hands after the war. It became a Jordanian position. The Harel Brigade fought hard for this hill. Twenty-three attempts failed. They held the position only briefly in 1948. Har Adar ultimately fell during the Six-Day War. A monument to the fallen Harel Brigade soldiers stands proudly today. The monument bears a quote from 2 Samuel 1:19.

Har Adar’s modern story is marked by its high socio-economic ranking. It boasts a stable economy. Its location near the Green Line is a constant reminder of its place in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A 2017 attack at a nearby checkpoint highlighted this reality. A Palestinian gunman killed three Israelis.

Har Adar is more than just a geographical location. It’s a living testament to the layers of history. It holds the echoes of ancient civilizations. It bears witness to the tumultuous events of the 20th century. It continues to play a role in the complex geopolitical reality of the region. It offers a glimpse into the past. It also offers a window into the present. Standing here you feel the weight of that history. You can feel it in the very earth beneath your feet.
