Muslim Prayer Lounge

Whispers of faith echo here. This is the Muslim Prayer Lounge in Accra a place where history breathes. Picture the late 1960s. The Madina Zongo settlement blossomed. People from La Osu and Teshie Zongo sought a new home. A trade fair was built. They decided to create an Islamic quarter. The land was meant for Muslims only. News reached Nima and Mamobi. People bought land. Houses sprang up. Chief Abdullahi Dagadu led the way. The population grew. A need for prayer spaces arose. Two attempts to build mosques failed. Then came the current mosque. It stands on the third chosen plot. The first settlers and a management committee built it. Expansion followed. In the early 1990s the current building rose. A response to a rapidly growing Muslim population. Ahlu Sunnah adherents spearheaded the construction. The mosque is one of the most important within the Ahlu Sunnah community in Greater Accra. The leaders named it Al-Wa’ayul Islamie Mosque. Many Imams have served this community. Imam Issah Adam was the first. Mallam Mumuni from La followed in the late 1970s. Mallam Musah then took the helm. He served until 1985. Sheikh Yunus Ibrahim a Saudi-trained scholar arrived. Mallam Musah stepped aside becoming deputy. Sheikh Yunus Ibrahim led the congregation until his passing in April 2020. May Allah grant him paradise. Sheikh Salman Mohammed Alhassan a Saudi-trained scholar took over as Imam in June 2020. Key figures helped build this place. Mallam Mohammed Nurudeen Jommo was one. Mallam Seidu Ali another. Late Baaba Amadu the first caretaker lived nearby. Sheikh Mohammed Khamis Swallah Yakub now of Agona Nyakrom was also instrumental. Chairman Umoru Salifu Alhaji Maliki and the late Mallam Swallah Larry the longest-serving Muazin all contributed. Several management committees have overseen the mosque. The current 12-member committee started in 2019. It replaced a committee that served nearly two decades. In June 2020 they registered the mosque as Al-Wa’ayul Islamie Centre. This gave it legal status and a clearer purpose. The centre now provides education for young and old. It offers marriage services and counselling. It helps new converts and administers Islamic inheritance. The centre also helps resolve disputes within the community. This Muslim Prayer Lounge is more than just a place of prayer. It’s a heart a centre of faith and community. It reflects the history and growth of Islam in Accra a testament to the dedication of those who built it and those who continue to keep its spirit alive.
