Tucked away on Jordanstraße, the Karl-Marx-Buchhandlung isn’t just a bookstore. It’s a living testament to Frankfurt’s intellectual and political history. This bookstore, born from the West German student movement of the 1960s, opened its doors in November 1970. Originally located at Unterlindau 74, it later moved to its current location on Jordanstraße. The Karl-Marx-Buchhandlung initially served as the bookselling outlet for the Neue Kritik publishing house. Its early days were intertwined with figures who would later become prominent in German politics, including Joschka Fischer, who was a partner in the bookstore’s GmbH. Even Daniel Cohn-Bendit and Tom Koenigs worked within its collective in the 1970s. The Karl-Marx-Buchhandlung wasn’t just a place to buy books. It became a hub for political discourse and activity, particularly within the Socialist German Student Union and the Frankfurt Sponti scene. This made it a target, as evidenced by the arson attack following the Hessian local elections in 1989. Yet, the Karl-Marx-Buchhandlung persevered. It adapted and evolved, becoming a renowned specialist bookstore, even earning the title of “Specialist Bookstore of the Year” in 2013. In 2001, it partnered with the Autorenbuchhandlung Frankfurt to open a branch specializing in fiction, known as Marx & Co, located in the Westend district. Today, the Karl-Marx-Buchhandlung continues to thrive, a testament to its dedicated staff and unwavering commitment to intellectual curiosity. Step inside, and you’ll find not just books, but a piece of Frankfurt’s vibrant past and present. It’s a place where history whispers from the shelves, and the spirit of debate and critical thinking fills the air. More than a bookstore, the Karl-Marx-Buchhandlung is a cultural institution, a reminder of the power of ideas and the enduring legacy of intellectual engagement.
