Has anyone here ever hunted pirates? Probably not. But Ditmar Koel did just that. We’re standing before the Ditmar Koel Statue. It commemorates a remarkable man. He was a captain, pirate hunter, and mayor of Hamburg.

In 1525, Koel commanded a ship in Admiral Simon Parseval’s fleet. On October 7, he battled the pirate Claus Kniphoff’s fleet. After eight hours, he captured the pirate ship Gallion. He brought the pirates and loot to Hamburg. In 1527, he was elected Ratsherr, a councilman.

Koel promoted the Reformation. He initiated the reformation of Hamburg. In 1536, as an admiral, he stopped a raid by Count Palatine Friedrich von Hadeln. From 1542 to 1548, Koel was Amtmann of Bergedorf. In 1548, he became mayor of Hamburg.

In 1559, Koel defended Hamburg-Moorburg against Duke Otto I of Brunswick-Harburg. In 1562, he went to Copenhagen. This diplomatic journey aimed to settle a conflict with the Danish king. He returned to Hamburg successfully. Then he died on September 22, 1563.

This statue of Ditmar Koel stands on the Kersten-Miles-Brücke. The sculptor Wilhelm Giesecke created it. Giesecke also studied at the Kunstakademie in Munich.
