Seven hundred and seventy-two. That’s the year Hartheim am Rhein first appeared in records. A small settlement nestled near the forest a place mentioned in the Lorscher Codex. This unassuming village in the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district holds a history far richer than its quiet present suggests.

Hartheim am Rhein isn’t just a pretty village. It’s a story woven through centuries. Its name itself hints at this. Hart meaning hard or firm ground. It tells of a community that took root in sturdy soil. Imagine the lives lived here under the shadow of the Black Forest. They persevered through wars and changing times.

The Thirty Years’ War devastated Hartheim am Rhein. The village was utterly destroyed. But like the hardy soil its name suggests Hartheim am Rhein rebuilt. It endured. The resilience of its people echoes in the very stones of its buildings. After the devastation there was a period of rebuilding.

The 18th and 19th centuries brought significant changes. A school was established in 1768 a sign of growing prosperity and community focus. A building dedicated to learning in this place. This is far from any obvious fact. The Tulla river straightening project altered Hartheim am Rhein’s relationship with the Rhine. The river changed course. The village that once stood directly on the riverbank was moved back.

In the 20th century Hartheim am Rhein experienced further evolution. It became part of the Freiburg district then later the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district. The neighboring villages of Bremgarten and Feldkirch were incorporated into Hartheim am Rhein in the 1970s. These villages each with their own history and character became part of Hartheim am Rhein.

Today Hartheim am Rhein is a thriving municipality. It boasts three Ortsteile – Hartheim Bremgarten and Feldkirch. Each retains its unique identity. Its history is visible everywhere. In its churches its school and even the names of its streets and squares. This village on the river has much to offer.

Hartheim am Rhein is more than a geographical location. It’s a living testament to resilience community and the enduring human spirit. The Alain-Foechterle-Erich-Dilger Bridge a symbol of Franco-German cooperation stands as a remarkable feat of engineering and a statement of peace and cooperation. It connects this quiet village to France. A bridge spanning not just water but history and friendship. Take a moment to appreciate the rich history of Hartheim am Rhein. It’s a story of strength survival and growth.
