How many high schools do you know that have been forced to relocate an entire student body due to a hurricane? Well, Kingwood High School in Houston, Texas, has just that story to tell. Kingwood High School first opened its doors in the fall of 1979. Since then, it has become a cornerstone of the community, known for its strong academics and impressive athletic program. The Mustangs, as they’re proudly called, have racked up numerous state championships in various sports, a testament to their dedication and spirit. But the story of Kingwood High School took a dramatic turn in 2017. Hurricane Harvey, a storm that wreaked havoc across the Houston area, severely damaged the school. The building was rendered unusable. The students and faculty were displaced, their familiar halls silenced by the storm’s aftermath. However, the spirit of Kingwood High remained unbroken. Classes were temporarily held at Summer Creek High School while a massive, $70 million repair project took place. Can you imagine the effort and coordination it took to make this happen? By March 2018, after a monumental effort, Kingwood High School reopened its doors. The return was a testament to the community’s resilience and commitment to education. Kingwood High stands today, not just as a school, but as a symbol of strength in the face of adversity.
