Today, Turkey Hill is part of a Massachusetts reservation. It provides stunning views of the Boston skyline and Massachusetts Bay. On a clear day, you can see as far as Gloucester. You can see the North Shore too.
Turkey Hill is managed by The Trustees and the Cohasset Conservation Trust. This collaboration ensures its preservation for future generations. The Cohasset Conservation Trust worked with The Trustees to purchase this property. This purchase was made possible by a state grant. Funds also came from private donors.
Turkey Hill features several miles of trails. These trails connect to the Whitney Spur Rail Trail. They also connect to Weir River Farm and Whitney and Thayer Woods. You can follow a trail up to the top of Turkey Hill from the Route 3A entrance. This trail will bring you to an open, grassy area.
The open fields atop Turkey Hill are mowed annually. This is an ongoing effort. It aims to restore grassland bird species. These species include bobolink and meadowlark. The slopes of Turkey Hill are mostly hardwood forest. You’ll find maple, oak, beech, pine, and hemlock trees.
Turkey Hill is visible very far offshore. This is due to its recognizable radio towers and a large water tank nearby. Captains navigating south of the Harbor entrance at Nantasket Roads can use these as a point of reference.
Turkey Hill Lane leads up over three elevated eminences. It is nearly a mile to the summit. The name Turkey Hill was bestowed due to the early abundance of wild turkeys there.
