The initial plan aimed for a population of 410000. The reality fell short. As of 2007 the population was approximately 230000. Many commuters travel to Osaka or Kyoto daily. Major companies like Sumitomo Metal Industries Bayer AG and Canon reduced their presence. Some development plans were even canceled. Despite these obstacles the city persevered.
But Kansai Science City is not a failure. Research continued to flourish. By 2005 business had recovered. Restrictions eased and new companies moved in. Over 100 facilities existed by 2007. This includes universities research institutes and cultural spaces. The Keihanna Expressway and the Keihanna Line provide vital transportation links. Connecting the city to surrounding areas.
