“A church on top of a church.” You may find this thought curious, but it’s true of the Parrocchiale Santi Nazaro e Celso. This church in Milan stands on the site of an older church dedicated to the same saints. The Parrocchiale Santi Nazaro e Celso wasn’t built in a day. The original church was demolished in the 16th century to give way to the current building. Construction on the new church began in 1567 and it was completed in 1622, The church was dedicated to the martyrs Nazario and Celso who in the first century, according to legend, were thrown into the sea for their faith. In 1897, the church was devastated by fire, which destroyed much of the interior. Amazingly, a subsequent restoration completed by 1900 restored the church to its former glory. While the facade is a modest Baroque style, the Parrocchiale Santi Nazaro e Celso interior features three naves supported by pillars. You can see traces of the original decorations. The Parrocchiale Santi Nazaro e Celso is a testament to faith and resilience. It is a reminder that even in the face of adversity, hope and beauty can rise again.
