Justice echoes through these walls. This is the Amtsgericht I und Landgericht I in Berlin. A significant landmark it stands as a silent witness to centuries of legal history. Built between 1896 and 1904 the building originally served as the city court. Architects Paul Thoemer Rudolf Mu00f6nnich and Otto Schmalz designed this impressive structure. The construction cost was over 1.6 million Marks a staggering sum for its time.

The Amtsgericht I und Landgericht I’s jurisdiction has changed over time. It initially covered a vast area including parts of Berlin Charlottenburg Niederbarnim and Teltow. The building itself is a mix of architectural styles blending elements of Neo-Baroque and Art Nouveau. Its imposing facade features a prominent portal and ornate gables. Originally four monumental corner towers stood tall. However these along with a quarter of the complex were demolished in 1968-69. This was to widen Grunerstrasse as part of urban renewal. The remaining structure was declared a historical monument.

During the Second World War the Amtsgericht I und Landgericht I suffered significant damage. Post-war reconstruction involved simplifications and alterations. The building housed the Supreme Court of the GDR the Berlin Attorney General and various district courts. Today the Amtsgericht I und Landgericht I remains a hub of legal activity in Berlin. The building is a reminder of how this part of Berlin evolved through history. The court hosted many politically charged trials. For instance lawyer Hans Litten defended leftist defendants here. A memorial plaque at the entrance commemorates him.

After the reunification of Germany a unified court structure was created for all of Berlin. The Amtsgericht Mitte which we see before us today was re-established in 1991. It is one of eleven district courts in Berlin under the jurisdiction of the Berlin Regional Court. The Amtsgericht Mitte is also the Central Enforcement Court for Berlin. Since January 1 2013 it has played this important role. The building has been restored and adapted to meet modern needs. It still stands as a testament to the enduring pursuit of justice in the heart of Berlin.

The Amtsgericht I und Landgericht I isn’t just a building. It’s a living history book. It speaks of power politics and the constant search for justice. Remember the stories whispered within these walls. They shape Berlin’s history. They continue to resonate today.
