Ever wondered why the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille has such an unusual mix of architectural styles? Today, we are standing before the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille. It is not just a building but a testament to faith. It represents perseverance and the blending of tradition with modernity.

Originally, this site was home to an ancient castle mound in Vieux-Lille. Work began in 1854 to build a church dedicated to Notre-Dame de la Treille. This name honors a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary. The statue was revered in Lille since the 13th century.

A competition sought a design inspired by the Gothic style of the early 1200s. Surprisingly, English architects won. However, entrusting the project to Anglican architects stirred controversy. The commission gave the job to Charles Leroy. He was a local architect.

Construction faced many funding problems. Work proceeded in stages. Several architects shaped the design over many years. The basilica minor title was granted to Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille by Pope Pius X in 1904. Finally, in 1913 Lille became a bishopric. Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille became its cathedral.

The building work slowed during the World Wars. A temporary facade was put up in 1947 due to lack of funds. It wasn’t until the 1990s that architect Pierre-Louis Carlier was commissioned to design a new facade. His modern design was finished in 1999.

Carlier blended tradition with modernity. The facade has thin marble slabs. They hang from metal supports beneath a broken arch. The central rose window by Ladislas Kijno shows the Resurrection. Georges Jeanclos crafted the bronze and glass portal. It honors the Virgin.

Look closely and admire the details. See the Soignies stone exterior and the copper statue of the archangel Gabriel. Also note the towering height of 3.30 m. Inside, the nave reveals more surprises. The Chapelle de la Vierge is modeled after Sainte Chapelle in Paris.

The Grand Orgue in the south transept is suspended from a metal frame. This was installed by the organ manufacturer Johannes Klais Orgelbau. It boasts 101 stops and around 7000 pipes. The cathedral’s crypt covers the building’s entire area. It is one of Europe’s largest.

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille is more than just architecture. It embodies the spirit of Lille. It displays the community’s determination. In 2009, the cathedral was listed as a historical monument. Its story continues to evolve. It keeps inspiring all who visit. The cathedral stands as a beacon. It symbolizes the city’s blend of history and progress. It is a must-see that embodies Lille’s soul.
