Gazing across the tranquil waters of Beira Lake, have you ever seen a temple that seems to float? This, my friends, is the Gangarama Sima Malaka. A place of serenity amidst the vibrant city of Colombo. Originally built in the late 19th century, the first Gangarama Sima Malaka met an unfortunate end, slowly sinking beneath the waves. But like a phoenix from the ashes, it was reborn in 1976, thanks to the vision of architect Geoffrey Bawa. The temple we see today, resting on three platforms connected by pontoon bridges, is his masterpiece. Bawa’s design was inspired by the ancient forest monasteries of Anuradhapura and Ritigala. The Gangarama Sima Malaka isn’t your typical place of worship. It’s primarily a sanctuary for meditation and quiet contemplation. As you cross the bridges, notice the intricate wooden details. The roof, adorned with striking blue tiles, stands out against the backdrop of the lake. The platforms themselves are adorned with numerous Buddha statues, each displaying a different mudra, or symbolic hand gesture. Take a moment to observe these serene figures, and perhaps even try to decipher the meaning behind their poses. On one platform, you’ll find a Bodhi tree, grown from a sapling of the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree in Anuradhapura. This direct lineage adds another layer of spiritual significance to the Gangarama Sima Malaka. And look closely at the four corners of this platform. You’ll discover small shrines dedicated to a fascinating mix of deities: Shiva, Vishnu, Kataragama deviyo, and Ganesha. A testament to Sri Lanka’s rich cultural tapestry. Even the funding of this remarkable temple has a story to tell. It was a Sri Lankan Muslim businessman, S. H. Moosajee, and his wife who financed the reconstruction, a touching tribute to their late son. As you leave the Gangarama Sima Malaka, carry with you the tranquility of this unique Buddhist temple. A testament to resilience, artistic vision, and interfaith harmony. It’s a place where the spiritual and the aesthetic intertwine, creating an unforgettable experience for all who visit.
