“Germans here!” That shout echoed through the halls. Welcome to the Château Dalle-Dumont. This grand building has a history far beyond its neo-classical facade.

The Château Dalle-Dumont began as a family home. The Derville family built it in 1910. Its design featured Tuscan columns. It marked the style of wealthy homes of the time.

But its peaceful existence was short-lived. World War I erupted. German forces requisitioned the château in 1914. It became a field hospital. They called it Feldlazarett Nr. 9. This Château Dalle-Dumont became a place of healing. It also became a place of death.

Wounded German soldiers arrived. They came from the Heuvelland front. This front stretched between Ypres and the French-Belgian border. The château’s park became a burial ground. Soldiers who succumbed to their injuries were laid to rest here.

The French government later moved the remains. In 1921 they were reinterred. The final destination was the German war cemetery. It was located on the Chemin du Grand Perne.

Here is a strange twist of fate. Adolf Hitler was treated here. He stayed at the Château Dalle-Dumont from October 13 to the Armistice. He was recovering from his wounds. Max Beckmann was also present. He served as a nurse.

In 1919, Alphonse Dalle-Dumont purchased the estate. He ensured the German cemetery was moved. The Dalle-Dumont family left its mark.

The town acquired the Château Dalle-Dumont in 1972. There was one condition. It must host cultural, educational and social activities. The building became a communal center. It fulfilled the family’s wish.

Today the Château Dalle-Dumont is a cultural hub. Local associations thrive here. The building hosts art workshops and dance schools.

The surrounding park is equally impressive. It spans about twelve hectares. Eight hectares are wooded. The park features diverse tree species. Oak, elm, and cherry trees dot the landscape. Visitors find tranquility here.

A restored 18th-century farmhouse stands apart. It houses the “Hier Wervicq” association. They manage a museum of old farm trades. Volunteers recreate scenes of agricultural life. Costumed mannequins depict daily routines. Old agricultural tools fill the space. Seeders, churns, and plows are on display. The stable’s attic houses a collection of taxidermied animals.

Near the farmhouse, a small animal park exists. The association maintains it. This area allows children to interact with animals.

The Château Dalle-Dumont offers a unique blend of history. It provides culture and nature. It stands as a testament. It shows resilience and community spirit. Take a moment to appreciate its layers. Each layer tells a story. This Château Dalle-Dumont is a landmark with a rich and varied past.
