Picture this. You are standing before Draddy Gymnasium. A majestic structure it stands tall. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to perseverance. A symbol of the spirit of Manhattan College.

Draddy Gymnasium isn’t just a sports arena. It’s a piece of history. It replaced Alumni Hall in 1978. That older gym was simply too small for the growing college. The new gymnasium was a much-needed upgrade. It houses a 200-meter track basketball courts and more.

The name Draddy itself holds a fascinating story. It honors Vincent De Paul Draddy. He was a Manhattan College football captain. He was also a successful businessman. His Lacoste knitwear ventures made him wealthy. Draddy’s success funded the building of this very gym. The gym is named after him and his family. His son sadly passed away in a car accident. His wife also passed away before the gymnasium’s construction was complete.

Building Draddy Gymnasium wasn’t easy. The 1970s were difficult times. New York City faced a major financial crisis. Manhattan College struggled. Then there was the storm. A huge storm blew away the initial steel structure. That caused significant setbacks and delays. The college persevered though. They rebuilt. They overcame adversity.

The finished Draddy Gymnasium is impressive. It holds 2345 people. It has hosted major events. It hosted the Mayor’s Cup Wheelchair Basketball Tournament. It even appeared in an episode of The Cosby Show. This impressive arena is also used daily by Manhattan College athletic teams.

Today Draddy Gymnasium remains a vibrant hub. It’s where the Manhattan Jaspers basketball and volleyball teams play. It’s where dreams are made. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Manhattan College. So next time you’re here. Remember the struggles and triumphs that built Draddy Gymnasium. It is a true New York City treasure.
