“Imagine” a small group of twenty-nine people. They gathered in a Germantown home in 1936. This was the humble beginning of Calvary Presbyterian Church.

Calvary Presbyterian Church’s story is one of faith. It is a story of growth and commitment. The church started in Mr. and Mrs. John S. Wurts’ home. The address was 267 East Johnson Street. Eighteen members signed the congregation’s articles. It was originally named Calvary Presbyterian Church of Germantown.

In July 1936, the Presbytery of Philadelphia welcomed the new congregation. The church first met at 66 West Chelten Avenue. This was the site of the Germantown YWCA. As the congregation grew, it moved to Germantown Orange Hall.

In 1949, a significant decision was made. The congregation chose to buy property in Glenside. They wanted to construct a building that suited their needs. Until the church building was ready in 1951, they met at Westminster Theological Seminary for two years.

Calvary Presbyterian Church supported new churches. These included Trinity OPC in Hatboro and Cornerstone OPC in Ambler. Also Grace Fellowship OPC in Germantown and Faith OPC in Broomall.

Its proximity to Westminster Seminary enriched the church. Numerous faculty and students joined in fellowship. Names like Cornelius Van Til and Ned B. Stonehouse. Also Paul Woolley and E. J. Young and their families.

Many pastors have led Calvary over the years. Cary Weisiger was the first, serving from 1937 to 1940. Theodore Jansma followed from 1941 to 1943. Eugene Bradford served from 1944 to 1951. Robert Atwell pastored from 1952 to 1961. Larry Sibley led from 1963 to 1967. Henry Coray served from 1967 to 1971. Robert Drake was pastor from 1972 to 1977. Daniel Morse served from 1978 to 1980. Steve Miller ministered from 1981 to 1994. Craig Troxel served from 1995 to 2007. Mark Sallade became pastor in 2008.

Each pastor brought unique gifts and experiences. They guided Calvary through different eras. Their leadership shaped the church’s identity. They helped to deepen its commitment to its faith.

Today, Calvary Presbyterian Church stands as a testament. It shows the enduring power of community. It is a beacon of faith. It reminds us that even the smallest beginnings can lead to great things. This church continues to serve its community. It shares the love of Jesus Christ. It remains rooted in its history. Calvary Presbyterian Church looks forward to a future filled with hope.
