Beneath the Nanmen Mountain Bridge, shadows dance with the currents. This bridge isn’t just a pathway; it’s a testament to ambition and innovation. The Nanmen Mountain Bridge is part of a larger marvel, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link. This link binds together two dynamic cities of the Pearl River Delta: Shenzhen and Zhongshan.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, a bridge-tunnel system, opened on June 30, 2024. It dramatically shortened travel time between the two cities to under 30 minutes. The project cost a staggering US$4.83 billion. Its construction, starting in May 2017, involved a complex series of bridges and tunnels. The link includes the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Tunnel, the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge, and the Zhongshan Bridge, all originating near Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport. It stretches an impressive 49.7 kilometers and boasts eight lanes.
The Nanmen Mountain Bridge stands as a piece of this modern marvel. The link’s longest span reaches an incredible 1,666 meters. The entire project is a feat of engineering. It comprises a 6.7-kilometer tunnel on the Shenzhen side and a series of bridges totaling 43 kilometers. The longest continuous bridge section stretches approximately 22.5 kilometers, with about 15.5 kilometers extending over the sea.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is more than just a connection between two cities. It represents a significant advancement in transportation infrastructure. This project pushed the boundaries of engineering. It resulted in the creation of 15 world-first core materials, key technologies, and major national equipment. The link achieved five significant breakthroughs. These include the world’s first bi-directional eight-lane underwater tunnel, the largest offshore span suspension bridge, and the first underwater interchange.
The link’s opening wasn’t without its initial hiccups. In the first few days, drivers and passengers reported congestion. Some faced long waits or detoured via the older Humen Bridge. Despite these early challenges, the link quickly proved its value. In its first month alone, over 3 million vehicles crossed the link, solidifying its importance to the region. The Nanmen Mountain Bridge, as an integral part of this link, stands as a symbol of progress and connection in the bustling Pearl River Delta. It’s a bridge to the future, built on innovation and a drive to connect communities.
