The imposing facade of St. James Cathedral stands before us, a testament to the rich history of Mauritius. This Anglican church, the oldest in Mauritius, was once an arsenal, a place where gunpowder for naval battles was stored. Can you imagine the thick walls and the soldiers guarding the potent powder? The building was built in the 1780s during the French colonial era. Later, the British transformed it into a place of worship, a haven for those seeking spiritual solace. In 1828, the Reverend Alexander Denny was appointed Senior Civil Chaplain. He embarked on a mission to restore the building, adding an octagonal spire and giving it the distinct appearance of a church. On the 25th of December, 1831, the renovated church opened its doors for the first time for divine service. The church’s significance grew. It became too small to accommodate the increasing congregation of soldiers, English civilians, and Mauritians seeking solace. In 1846, two wings were added, and in 1850, the grounds were fenced off. Today, St. James Cathedral stands as a beacon of peace, a symbol of resilience, and a reminder of the island’s rich cultural heritage. As you gaze upon its majestic structure, you’ll be transported back in time, witnessing the transformation of a once formidable arsenal into a place of faith and spiritual enlightenment. The cathedral’s journey from a powder magazine to a place of worship reflects the evolving character of Mauritius itself.
