Did you know that right here before us lies Pot Cove a place steeped in history? Pot Cove isn’t just a pretty waterfront spot. It’s a location with a rich past. It was once home to a Native American settlement. This settlement thrived on the cove’s resources. They fished in the Hell Gate. They cultivated maize. They harvested oysters.

Long before Astoria Park was developed Pot Cove was a vital area. The Native Americans used the cove for fishing and farming. The name Pot Cove itself might come from pottery found here or from a nearby whirlpool called The Pot. This whirlpool was notoriously dangerous. It caused many shipwrecks.

The area around Pot Cove saw many changes over the centuries. Wealthy families like the Barclays the Potters the Woolseys and the Hoyts built grand estates along the shore. Their mansions stood where Astoria Cove a large apartment complex is planned today. These estates were eventually demolished to make way for Astoria Park and later developments.

Pot Cove was also important during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. The British controlled the Astoria peninsula. They engaged in cannon battles with American forces. Fort Stevens was later built nearby to protect Manhattan.

An interesting detail about Pot Cove is Pot Rock. This enormous glacial boulder caused many shipwrecks in Hell Gate. It was so dangerous that the federal government dynamited it in 1876. This was the largest man-made detonation before the atomic bomb.

Today Pot Cove is overshadowed by Astoria Park. Its history though lives on. It reminds us of the area’s diverse past. From Native American settlements to wealthy estates to a modern development Pot Cove has witnessed it all. The next time you visit Astoria Park take a moment to reflect on the history of this fascinating place. Remember the stories of Pot Cove. They are a vital part of New York City’s rich heritage.
